First lawn mowing of the year.

Shearing

Our ewes lost their wool coats over the weekend.

A few minutes, a $5 haircut and a year's worth of fleece is removed.

It must feel nice after the warm weather we've been having.

We'll use the wool to insulate more portable pasture shelters. This year we are building multi-purpose units that will hold 3 farrowing nests or litters of growing pigs. It's nice that our sheep are so generous with their wool.

Winter Grazing

I'm not the only one that loves the warmer weather.

The sheep have been making the most of it,

digging through the snow for the sweeter grass beneath.

New Faces

Although we've been trying to build our flock of Tunis sheep, high lamb prices have made this rare breed even harder to come by.

To supplement our flock we've added Katahdins, a hair sheep that sheds its wool when the weather turns warm.

We are looking forward to colorful lambs this spring!
