Emerging Spring

Well, I was able to collect about 30 gallons of sap. I'd been hoping for closer to 100, but the arrival of spring is a nice trade-off even if it does mean the end of syruping for the year.

I've been hearing red-winged blackbirds down the road on my way to the maple trees and this morning they arrived in the little wetland in front of the house. The robins are back in force. I saw 10-20 of them working over one of the neighbors' plowed fields. I also welcomed the first killdeer to the farm today!

I love the new chorus of sounds. Any guesses as to who will contribute their voice next? I'm hoping the spring peepers will join in soon. Such an exciting time of year with so many old friends returning!
